Five Elements, Five Personalities: Giving the VF 3 a Social Identity
How a familiar cultural system became a playful new way to discover the VinFast VF 3.
For a car as distinctive as the VinFast VF 3, colour is more than a finishing choice. It is part of the personality.
For this social series, NewNow explored a simple question: what if choosing your VF 3 could feel a little like choosing a version of yourself?
Working with FGF, we turned to one of the most familiar systems in Asian culture: Ngũ Hành — the Five Elements of Water, Earth, Wood, Metal and Fire.
Rather than treating the framework literally, we reinterpreted each element as a different visual world, personality and attitude — creating five distinct ways for audiences to see the same vehicle.
From product colours to personalities
Automotive communication often presents colour through polished product photography and specifications. On social media, however, a colour can carry much more meaning.
Blue can feel fluid and adventurous.
Yellow can feel grounded and confident.
Green can suggest energy and growth.
Silver can feel sharp and contemporary.
Red can immediately communicate intensity and boldness.
The Five Elements gave us a culturally recognisable structure through which these associations could become stories.
Each VF 3 was paired with an elemental identity:
Thuỷ — Water
Fluid, adaptable and always in motion.
Thổ — Earth
Grounded, dependable and quietly confident.
Mộc — Wood
Fresh, energetic and continuously growing.
Kim — Metal
Precise, modern and distinctive.
Hoả — Fire
Bold, expressive and impossible to ignore.
The result was not simply a set of colour variations, but five different personalities built around one product.
Designing for the scroll
On social media, communication has only a fraction of a second to earn attention.
The campaign was therefore built around a simple hierarchy: one car, one element, one dominant colour, one immediate idea.
Large-scale elemental typography makes the concept readable even before audiences engage with the supporting copy. Strong colour blocking allows each post to stand independently in the feed, while the repeated composition creates a recognisable visual rhythm when the five executions are viewed together.
That repetition also introduces a natural interaction mechanic.
Audiences are not simply looking at five versions of a vehicle. They are invited to ask:
Which element am I?
Which personality fits me?
And which VF 3 would I choose?
A product choice becomes a small act of self-expression.
Making culture feel contemporary
The Five Elements are an ancient cultural framework. The creative opportunity was not to reproduce its traditional visual language, but to reinterpret it for a new generation.
Instead of calligraphy, classical symbols or ornamental motifs, the campaign uses 3D typography, glossy materials, digital textures and bold compositions.
The cultural reference remains instantly understandable, but the execution belongs firmly to contemporary social media.
It demonstrates an approach we often take at NewNow: starting with something audiences already know, then giving them a new way to experience it.
Because culturally relevant communication does not always have to feel traditional.
Sometimes, it can be bright, playful, digital — and sitting behind the wheel of a VF 3.
